Hoe Many People on a Home inspection

Moving into a new home is one of the most exciting times in life – especially if this is your first home. But according to University of Hospitals and other experts, moving is considered one of the most stressful things that we can do in life.

So knowing that information, anything we can do to keep the stress down will be helpful. Whether this is your first time moving, or you are an experienced pro and move quite often, having a checklist of things to do and some handy tips can make your move go that much smoother. In this article, we will give you some tips and reminders on making a smart move.

1. Remember to Turn on Your Utilities

This may sound like a logical thing that your agent, attorney, father-in-law, or someone else would remind you of – but its sad to say that some people forget to have their utilities switched over before closing and moving in. This can create a couple of issues. First, many people have had the power turned off, and then not be able to have it turned back on again right away. This can create issues with food going bad because of no refrigeration, no water if you have a well, and all sorts of issues. The other thing that can happen is the seller has at times forgotten to take the power out of their own name – and you end up using power on their dime. While that sounds like “their problem”, it can actually become yours and can create a legal issue as well.

2. Do a Deep Clean BEFORE Moving Day

Too many times people try to clean as they move in. This creates a whole host of issues of trying to clean while furniture and other items are being moved in. Spots get missed, and it creates a great deal of stress. Instead, try doing a deep clean a few days ahead of time before moving in. That way you know that your home is sparkling clean for all your stuff and you can focus on the move itself.

3. Change the Locks

This should really be one of the very first things you do. While the sellers may have seemed nice and it is a good neighborhood, you never know who else has a copy of the sellers’ keys. Always take the time to change all of your locks as soon as you take possession of the home.

4. Make Repairs Before Furniture Goes in

This falls under the same principle as point number 2. If you try to cram repairs into your moving day, all that ends up happening is usually rushed repairs and hindering the move. Work at these repairs before you move in to ensure your move goes smoothly.

5. Change Your Smoke & CO Detectors

Even if the CO and smoke detectors look newer – you can never be too safe in this regard. It is not the cheapest thing you will ever do – but not the most expensive either. Be sure to use the best CO and smoke detectors you can buy – as they are critical safety devices. Also, be sure to mark them with the date you installed them so that you can keep track and replace them again at the proper time down the road.

6. Don’t Stress

It’s your new home – don’t stress – be happy! While moving is considered one of the most stressful things we can do in life, focus on the positive things and your move will go that much better!
