One of the best ways to save on electricity costs is to become smart about how electricity is being used. There are several free things that homeowners can do to save on energy usage. Reducing energy usage will lower the cost of monthly electricity bills and also help the environment.

There are a few simple changes that can add up to big savings. First and foremost turn off all unnecessary lights in the house and use natural lighting during the day. Just those two simple changes can save you $35 a year.

Long hot showers are awesome but making the change to taking shorter showers can save you money annually. Leaky hot water faucets are a sneaky culprit for rising costs. Fixing those pesky leaks will save you money. It’s also an excellent idea to turn off the water when you’re shaving, brushing your teeth, and washing your hands.

Unplug all unused electronics. 10% of the annual electricity use at home, is caused by standby power. You should also think about switching to a laptop if you’re still using an old desktop a quick easy fix to save money.

Managing the thermostat will also save you money. Be sure to turn off the air conditioner when you’re not at home and lower your heat a couple of degrees to save on the heating bill. It’s also a good idea to use your oven less in the summer. Oven use generally increases the need for air conditioning. Summer is a great time for salads, smoothies, and BBQ.
