How to deal with neighbors

Buying a new house is an exciting moment. However, what if everything is perfect in your home but then you realize you can’t stand one of your neighbors? According to several surveys, there are a lot of reasons why your neighbor could drive you insane. From the simple things like the fact that they ask too many questions to big issues like noise, cleanliness, or outright hostility.

You can’t choose your neighbor since your primary focus is looking for an ideal home. To make the moving experience better, you might want to get started on the right foot. Make sure to give an excellent impression to your neighbors and find time to build a good relationship with them. This is the right time to start a positive trend in your neighborhood. In this article, we’ll give a few tips on how to deal with your new neighbors.

Be an example of a good neighbor

Before you even assume that your neighbor is a nightmare, you must first know what causes their annoying behavior. As a new member of the neighborhood, you should be a role model to leave an excellent first impression. Ask yourself these questions:

  • How loud am I? Music coming from the TV, loud music, and noise from machinery and similar things should be avoided.
  • Do you have friendly and quiet pets? If they are roaming the neighborhood, being aggressive, or noisy, this could annoy your neighbors.
  • Are you keeping your place clean?  If your neighbor sees your area messy with junk and your lawn is overgrown, it might leave a negative impression.
  • Are property lines respected? Prevent disputes by ensuring you keep within your boundaries. You should also keep your belongings, trees, and fences from encroaching on the property of your neighbors.

If it’s not documented, It never happened

When you know you are dealing with bad neighbors, try your best to fix it first without involving any third party. Then, if conflicts arise, resolve all problems peacefully and adequately documented. Remember that the local police, the city building department, a neighborhood group, and your Homeowner Association (HOA) might need to be involved. You should keep good records of names, photos, recordings, texts, and emails as proof when needed.

Don’t think negatively

If there are problems, you must think positively and not let anger push you to run to your neighbor and rant. You have to approach your neighbor in a friendly manner. If you need to escalate the situation, it’s best to speak with each other over dinner or coffee when possible. Show them that you are mature enough to listen and discuss with them solutions to the issue. Often our neighbors are unaware that their actions are causing a problem. Learn to empathize with your neighbor and don’t always assume it’s something personal against you.

Ask for help from the authorities

Having a friendly conversation with your neighbor over coffee won’t always fix all issues. If all else fails, you might need to seek help from the authorities. Ensure you submit your case to the proper authorities that has the jurisdiction to care for these issues. Sometimes a first step will involve contacting your HOA before you escalate it further.

Know the rules

When issues arise, you must weigh things and see if a formal complaint is needed. You can’t just make a complaint without having any idea what the laws are. Before filing a complaint, you must know the neighborhood rules to show you understand what you’re talking about. You need to research online, talk to your HOA, and speak to your lawyer to help you get a grip on the rules that apply to the current situation. Understanding if you are the one that is in the right is essential before making an issue a big deal. Lastly, even if you know you are in the right, you should always try to speak to your neighbors in a friendly manner and discuss things calmly.

Listen to your neighbor’s complaints

Constructively bringing your problems to your neighbors is very crucial. However, you always have to empathize with and treat them with respect. It is always better to be nice than to be “Right.” The problem might not be that important to you, but you must listen to understand why it is essential to them. Listening to your neighbors’ complaints with respect will help you keep a good relationship with your neighbor despite the issues arising. Always respond politely to your neighbors’ requests reasonably if you want to be treated the same way. Learn to compromise for the sake of peace and harmony in your neighborhood.

Stay away from anything that can cause conflict

You might think your neighborhood is perfect, but you must be cautious of behavior, even for small things like noise and shared driveways. Do your best to avoid tension and conflict in any situation, whether you know your neighbors too well or are just new in town.

Some homebuyers might not care who their neighbors are, but later on, you will realize how important it is to have a good relationship with your neighbors. A peaceful relationship with your neighbor will undoubtedly benefit you in the long run, and it will make your neighborhood that much more pleasant to live in.
